Class 8 (Year 5 & 6)

Welcome to Class 8
This year, the teachers in Class 8 are Mrs Sheldon and Miss Hudspith and we are also very lucky to have the wonderful support of Mrs Brain. We are really excited to begin this year’s journey and can’t wait to see all the amazing things the children will achieve.

In Class 8, we talk a lot about aiming high and believing in ourselves. We encourage the children to be resilient learners who don’t give up when things feel tricky and take pride in trying their very best. We celebrate mistakes as learning opportunities and enjoy seeing the children grow in confidence.

As the oldest children in school, we know the importance of setting a great example. We encourage kindness, respect and responsibility in everything we do, whether that’s supporting a classmate, working hard in lessons or taking on important roles around school.

We also place a big emphasis on working together as a team and celebrating each other’s successes. Talk partners and group activities give the children a chance to share their brilliant ideas and learn from one another.

We have lots of exciting learning planned this year, and we are sure it will be a memorable one. Please also take a look at the attached ‘End Of Year Expectations’ leaflet, which outlines the skills and knowledge children should be aiming for by the end of both Year 5 and Year 6.

Homework Menu & Homework Books
Each half term, children are given a new ‘Homework Menu’ from which they can select a specific number of activities to complete from the different areas of learning.

They can present their work in their homework book by either drawing/writing directly onto the paper or by sticking in printed sheets or photographs. Homework books should be returned to school during the last week of each half term.

There is a lot of choice on each menu and we really hope that pupils have fun working on their chosen projects!

Knowledge Organiser
A Knowledge Organiser is a go-to document for a topic/unit of work: each one identifies the key information that children need to have learned by the end of a topic. It also acts as a tool to support children in retaining and retrieving knowledge for life-long learning.

We have developed our own Knowledge Organisers to support the delivery of the curriculum, with each one starting with knowledge children should already know from previous learning. Each organiser also has a quiz to help children recall the knowledge and a list of technical vocabulary with definitions.
