  • Physical Education (PE)

At Orchard Primary School, we believe that high-quality Physical Education inspires children to be active, challenge themselves and discover the enjoyment of sport. Our PE curriculum is designed to develop physical competence, confidence and a lifelong positive attitude towards physical activity.

Through a broad and balanced programme, children develop their skills, knowledge and understanding across a range of sports and physical activities. They are given opportunities to work independently, collaborate with others and compete in a supportive environment. Through these experiences, children develop important life skills including resilience, determination, teamwork, self-discipline and respect.

    Our PE Values
We promote nine core values throughout PE:

    • Be determined and demonstrate resilience when faced with challenges.
    • Respect others, including teammates, opponents, coaches and officials.
    • Develop self-control and learn to manage emotions appropriately.
    • Be a team player and understand the importance of individual contributions.
    • Win with pride and lose with grace, showing good sportsmanship at all times.
    • Understand the importance of practice and preparation in achieving success.
    • Set realistic goals and work positively towards achieving them.
    • Aspire to improve and challenge themselves to reach their potential.
    • Have fun and enjoy being active!

    Our PE Curriculum
PE at Orchard Primary School begins by developing individual skills and physical confidence before progressing towards cooperative activities in pairs, small groups and teams. Children experience a varied programme including games, athletics, gymnastics, dance and outdoor adventurous activities, giving them the opportunity to develop a wide range of physical skills.

We also work with high-quality sporting coaches to enhance our PE provision and provide children with additional opportunities to develop their skills and experience different sporting activities.

Being active is encouraged beyond PE lessons too. Children are encouraged to make the most of opportunities to be physically active at break and lunchtime, as well as taking part in our range of after-school clubs, competitions and wider sporting activities.

Swimming is an important part of our PE provision. In Year 4, children have the opportunity to take part in swimming lessons at Ashby Grammar School, supporting them to develop water confidence, swimming competence and essential water safety skills.

We want every child to leave Orchard Primary School feeling confident, capable and excited to be active, with the skills and positive attitudes they need to enjoy sport and physical activity both now and in the future.
